Waiver for use of the sauna

For certain activities, attendees will be asked to sign a waiver. This is necessary for our insurance.

Informed Consent & Assumption of Risk (Traditional Finnish Sauna)

Provider: Drew Nichols and Maia Hart

Location: River Haven, Park Lane, Millstream Qld 4888

1. Nature of Activity & Statutory Framework

I understand that a traditional Finnish sauna involves exposure to high temperatures (typically 70–90°C+) and humidity (steam from water thrown on hot stones). This waiver is entered into voluntarily and is intended to have effect under the Voluntary Assumption of Risk Act 2002 (Qld).

2. Who Should Not Use the Sauna

I certify that I do not have any of the following conditions, or if I do, I have obtained written clearance from my doctor:

- Cardiovascular conditions: Unstable heart disease, recent heart attack, severe hypertension, or hypotension

- Acute illness: Fever, acute inflammation, or infectious diseases

- Impaired Judgment/Sweating: Under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair sweating or judgment (e.g., antihistamines, anticoagulants, stimulants, sedatives)

- Other: Epilepsy, severe kidney disease, or pregnancy (consult doctor first)

3. Metal Objects, Jewellery & Personal Items

I understand that metal conducts heat rapidly and can cause serious burns. I confirm that:

I will remove all jewellery before entering, including rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches, and all body piercings.
If a piercing cannot be removed, I will cover it with a heat-safe barrier or not enter the sauna.

- I will not bring metal water bottles or metal containers into the sauna. I will use only heat-safe, non-metal drink bottles (e.g., BPA-free plastic or silicone) or leave drinks outside.

- I will remove clothing with metal components (e.g., zips, buttons, underwire) or ensure they do not contact the skin.

- I agree to remove eyeglasses with metal frames.

4. Recommended Time & Session Guidelines

- Recommended session length: Maximum 15–20 minutes per session for beginners.
Experienced users should not exceed 30 minutes continuously.

- Cooling breaks: I will exit between sessions to cool down and rehydrate.

- Total time: I will not exceed a total of 1 hour of sauna use in any single visit, including rest breaks or immersing in the river.

- Hydration: I will drink water before, during (if needed), and after sauna use.

5. Symptoms Requiring Immediate Exit

I understand that I must exit the sauna immediately if I experience: dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint, nausea, vomiting, rapid or irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, headache, confusion, muscle cramps, excessive weakness or fatigue, any feeling of being unwell or overheated, or burning or discomfort from hot surfaces or metal items.

6. My Agreement & Disclosure

I confirm that:

- I am using the sauna voluntarily and assume all inherent risks.

- I will follow all safety rules (no alcohol, time limits, hydration, removal of metal items).

- I will advise you immediately if I have any health condition that could be worsened by heat, or if I am taking any medication that affects my sweating or blood pressure.
